HISTORY
The Pulaski Police Department formed the Bike Patrol in 1995, in an effort to enhance community oriented policing. This operation has been effective in familiarizing patrol officers with the citizens and businesses of the Town. The Bike Patrol Unit currently consists of one sergeant and five officers. Weather permitting and staffing, Officers ride year round. As departments have learned throughout the country, bike patrols are very effective in dealing with crimes that take place where police cars cannot go, or where they cannot go without being noticed.
EQUIPMENT
Pulaski Police Bike Patrol Officers ride Smith & Wesson and Fuji Mountain bikes. These specialty bikes are equipped with headlights, taillights, strobe lights, and a siren.
OFFICER TRAINING
Pulaski Police Bike Patrol Officers have completed their certification as Police Cyclists through the International Police Mountain Bike Association (IPMBA). Each officer must attend the IPMBA Police Cyclist training which covers panic braking, obstacle avoidance, ascending and descending stairs as well as riding down steep grades, dismounts, vehicle stops with a bike, and pedestrian pursuits. This training consists of both classroom education and hands-on bike training. To become certified, officers must pass a written examination as well as a bike test.
